A Medallion Signature Guarantee is required before beneficiaries can sell or transfer stocks or funds that come from the USA or Canada. Transfer agents will not complete the sale without this barcoded stamp, even if you already hold a Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration.

The guarantee was introduced to prevent cross-border fraud. It certifies the signature used to transfer the assets and confirms who accepts liability if a forgery is later found. Original stock certificates, a death certificate and the probate Grant are usually required too.
