Who applies forLetters of Administration?

Upon the death of a loved one, the first and most important step is to check if they have left a valid will. If you’re unsure or are unable to locate a will for the deceased, a service like Willfinda should help you locate one (given one has been written).

If you are successful in finding a valid will, then it will state who is in charge of dealing with the estate of the deceased and who needs to apply for a Grant of Probate.

Make sure you check with friends and family members, local solicitors and will writers that may have been used or any banks that the deceased was a member of.

If you are still unable to locate the will after searching high and low, then Rules of Intestacy will apply to whoever needs to apply. These rules will place relatives above anyone else in the following order: married partner or civil partner, the child or children, parents of the deceased, any siblings, any half-siblings, grandparents, aunts or uncles, half aunts or uncles and if not then it will go to the Crown.
